Winter in New England is unpredictable, and snow, ice, and power outages can impact more than just travel , they can disrupt work schedules, staffing coverage, and daily operations. At The Alpha Group, we believe preparation and communication are key to keeping both our employees and client partners running smoothly during winter weather.
A little planning now can help prevent last-minute issues later and ensure everyone stays safe and informed.
Stay Informed Before You Head to Work
If severe weather is expected, it’s important to stay up to date on local conditions, road safety, and employer notifications. Temporary employees should always follow the communication guidelines provided by The Alpha Group and their worksite supervisor regarding closures, delays, or schedule changes.
When in doubt, reach out to your Alpha Group contact. Proactive communication helps us manage coverage, adjust staffing plans, and support our clients effectively.
Emergency Alerts: Your First Line of Defense
The National Weather Service issues weather watches and warnings throughout the winter season. Knowing the difference and having multiple ways to receive alerts can help you make safe, informed decisions about travel and work attendance.
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) recommends having more than one method for receiving emergency alerts, including at least one with an audible notification that can wake you overnight.
Recommended Alert Options:
- Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA): Automatic alerts sent to most newer cell phones. Check your phone settings to ensure alerts are enabled.
- Emergency Alert System (EAS): Alerts broadcast through TV and radio. Keep a battery-powered radio available in case of power outages.
- Social Media: Follow MEMA on X and Facebook for real-time updates.
- Local Alerts: Sign up for weather and emergency notifications specific to your city or town.
Staying informed allows you to plan ahead, whether that means adjusting your commute or coordinating with your staffing manager before your shift.
Power Outages & Transportation Disruptions
Winter storms can cause unexpected power outages and road closures. MEMA, National Grid, and Eversource all offer outage maps and alert tools to help you track conditions in your area.
From a workforce perspective, planning for potential downtime is just as important as planning for peak demand. If a power outage or unsafe travel conditions affect your ability to report to work, notify The Alpha Group as soon as possible so we can support both you and our client.
Heating Assistance, Shelters & Community Resources
If winter weather creates challenges related to heating, housing, or utilities, help is available.
Community organizations and state programs offer assistance with:
- Heating and fuel support
- Temporary shelter and housing resources
- Warming centers and emergency transportation
You can also call 2-1-1, the Commonwealth’s 24/7 information line, for up-to-date information on warming centers, transportation restrictions, and disaster assistance.
Additional Winter Readiness Tips
MEMA recommends preparing your home and vehicle for winter by:
- Keeping an emergency supply kit on hand
- Ensuring your vehicle is winter-ready
- Planning extra travel time during storms
- Charging devices ahead of severe weather
For employees, preparation helps ensure safe attendance. For employers, it helps maintain continuity. Either way, planning ahead benefits everyone.
